Britain’s Architectural Renaissance
Although this is our second trip to London, I have no particular recollection of being impressed by the city’s architecture last time. Perhaps we were too busy last time to simply admire buildings — so static. This time, architecture old and new drew me in.
From the London Tower, to Henry VIII’s Hampton Court, Westminster Palace London Bridge, and St.Paul’s Basilica. There is something captivating about those classic buildings.
Perhaps it’s all the emphatic vertical lines reaching for the sky; none more so than St. Paul’s, which - fun fact - was the tallest structure and tallest building in the world for several centuries!
As with many cities with a long history, the old and new sometimes appear in stark contrast.
On this trip, it was the new unique buildings, seemingly all popping up in the last four years that struck me. One day, while Masha and Alya went to see the Cursed Child, I wondered around London in search of original and quirky architecture.
And of course, there are random cool scenes throughout the city -
though none were as befuddling as the BT tower when I first saw it coming out of the Connaught Bar, after several delightful beverages.
