An Ode to Sorrento, of Sorts
Italy’s Campania region is chock-full of evocative names — Sorrento, Amalfi coast, Vesuvius, Pompeii, Capri. Even when you can’t quite place the name, they have an exotic, intriguing ring. Thus, we decided to brave the crowds and spent five days exploring the Sorrento peninsula.
Bologna the Fat
Bologna the Red, they call it, the Learned, and of course, Bologna the Fat. In our two weeks we did come across some fantastic culinary experiences!
Bologna, Where Everybody Knows your Name
For our longest stay in Italy, we chose Bologna, a place renown for its food. It was a nice change of pace to have our own bread monger and cheese monger, and to be repeat customers in cute local shops. The relative lack of tourists give the city an air of calm and authenticity.
Sunday Afternoon Malaise on the Road
Long term travel amplifies many tendencies and vulnerabilities. If you're as sensitive to rain and bad weather as myself, when you're away from your favorite comforts and friends, the lazy patter of rain against the roof with a background of general greyness can be suffocating.
The Tyrol Talent Show
We rounded out our cultural program in Innsbruck with a concert of local folk music, song, and dance. More kitschy than I could have imagined, it was also a glorious exhibition of musical ingenuity.
Touring Tyrol, Austria
To escape (yet another) imminent heat wave, we changed our plans at the last moment and, instead of north Italy, took a train to Innsbruck, Austria, a true Alpine city in the Tyrol region.
Vintgar Gorge - it Really is that Gorgeous
Although seasoned world travelers may rate Vintgar below some Swiss canyons, the enchanting scenery definitely exceeded my expectations.
Bled and Bohinj
There’s few more famous landmarks in Slovenia than lake Bled. But of course, if you ask most Slovenians they will scoff at it --“Tourist trap!” — and praise the nearby Bohinj. Having over a month at our disposal, we went to see both and to attempt to summit Bohinj’s Vogel peak.
Murano and Burano - When 118 Islands Just ain’t Enough
We tour Burano - the island of absurdly colorful houses - and Murano - the island of glasswork masters.
The Austrian Trains are not Alright
The Sitfortheroadster family hits snag after snag in attempting to train to & from Austria, busting the myth of their well oiled transportation machine
Water Bombs in Bled!
Bled lake is big and wide. And today, I will take you about a really cool water park on its castle side. It has slides and jumps galore, food and crafts, and sun and fun. You will not want for more!
Sparkling Kristalwellen
Near the small(ish) mountain city of Innsbruck sit rows of industrial buildings with the proud sign “Swarovski” at the top.
Kolibri - the only game in town
When I first searched for exotic cocktails in Ljubljana, several places popped up with promising menus. Of these, the closest and the most open was Kalibri, so I started with it.
Goriška Brda & Trieste - the Travelog
Since we only rented cars for trips, we tried to maximize each one. In this case we drove to Brda after seeing the Postojna caves and Predjama castle (subject of a future post), and hit Trieste on the way out.
Velika Planina - Greener than you Thought Possible
Between the emerald green fields, the snowcapped mountains in the background and the clean mountain air, the place is absolutely gorgeous.
In Search of the Perfect Kava in Ljubljana
Kava we quickly learned here means coffee - and coffee means espresso. But what if you want to saver your coffee, to drink more than an ounce of it and without diluting it with milk? Then read on.
Hiking near Ljubljana - Šmarna Gora and Viševnik
I explore the best hiking Slovenia has to offer — without driving too far or working too hard.
Designed For People Like Us
Our first impression if Slovenia, coming from Paris, was of tranquility and freshness.
